Mangalore, Aug 16: John Misquith (46), better known to the Konkani community as "Johny Suratkal", breathed his last in Fr Muller Hospital on Wednesday, August 16 at 4-30 pm.

About two months ago, he had come down from Kuwait, where had been based for many years, for medical reasons. Only about four days ago, he was diagnosed with blood cancer and it was found to be in an advanced stage.

Johny was a great supporter of Konkani language, culture and related activities. He had supported a number of Konkani journals. Besides, he was regular writer, director and popular comedy actor. He had written a book called "Fanteachem Soponn".

In Kuwait, he was the co-founder of Konkani Kullwar and also one of the founder-members of Kuwait Canara Welfare Association (KCWA). He ran a catering business called Tip Top Caterers in Kuwait.

Johny was popular not only in Mangalore and Kuwait, but also in other parts of the Gulf. Coming within months of the death of another great Konkani personality Mick Max, Johny's passing away has brought a pall of gloom in the Konkani community in Mangalore.

He is survived by his mother Faustine, wife Rita, son Ryan, brothers Francis and Gabriel, and sisters Rita and Sr Lucy.
