Mangalore, Aug 15: Independence Day was celebrated by the district administration, in association with several schools and institutions, on the morning of Tuesday, August 15, on Nehru Maidan.

The district police, the police band, the district armed reserve, school children including NCC, Girl Guides, Seva Dal and other organizations etc. took part in an awe-inspiring parade and march past, with district minister-in-charge B Nagaraj Shetty receiving the guard of honour.

In his speech, Shetty detailed the developmental works completed, in progress and under planning, like ratiioning, Aradhana scheme, total hygiene programme, interlinking of rivers in DK and Udupi districts, projects under the ADB finance and the like.

District commandant of the Home Guards Dr K P Shivaprasad Rai (President's medal), assistant sub inspector Narayan Byndoor (state medal), chess prodigies Vanessa and Manasa, athlete Poovamma (received by her mother) were honoured for their achievements.

Relief cheques of Rs 50,000 each were handed over to the families of two fishermen who lost their lives during the recent monsoon havoc.

SP B Dayananda, DC's headquarters assistant A G Bhat, MLAs Yogish Bhat and Krishna Palemar and top officials were present on the occasion.

The Independence Cup Cricket Tournament also was inaugurated by minister Shetty by trying a 'southpaw' sample of bowling.

A large number of citizens attended the event. A break that rain gave helped in the function going on smoothly.
