  • Explosions at Khar Road, Mira Road and Matunga stations

Mumbai, Jul 11: A major explosion has been reported on a local Mumbai train going from Churchgate to Borivili at Tuesday evening around 6-25.

The explosion took place between Santacruz and Khar station. CNN-IBN Correspondent Jency Jacob, who was on the train says, the blast took place in the first-class compartment.

He reports that several blood-stained bodies were seen lying on the tracks. The coach of the train was blown to bits, reports Jency.

No casualty figure could be ascertained.

A second explosion has been reported from Mira Road station and another at Matunga.

Mumbai: A series of blasts took place at Matunga, Khar, Santacruz, Jogeshwari, Borivali and Bhayendar suburban railway stations Tuesday evening.

All the explosions took place in first class compartments of trains at a time when a majority of Mumbaikars were return home from office, railway control sources said.

Eyewitnesses said a large number of people were seriously injured and all trains on the Western line route had been suspended.

A PTI reporter at Santa Cruz station said a blast rocked Borivali-bound local at 1824 hours and seven to eight injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

The explosion occurred in the first class compartment of the train and several passengers were jumped out of the speeding train in panic.

Around 12 to 15 people injured at Santa Cruz station were taken to nearby V N Desai hospital and the entire first class bogey had been emptied.

All local phones, including mobile services, in the city had jammed apparently due to congestion in the system as anxious people tried to reach their loved ones.

Another 20 injured were admitted to the KEM hospital in Central area of Parel, hospital sources said.

Police cordoned off all railway stations on the Western line and strict frisking and checking were carried out at the Central and Harbour sections of local trains services.

In its wake, Delhi has also been put on high alert.

The police will be verifying the nature of blasts. The IB is also probing the link between the blasts at Srinagar and Mumbai.

Mar 12, 1993: A series of 13 bomb explosions that left more than 257 dead with 1,400 others injured.

Dec 02, 2002: Two persons were killed and 31 injured in a powerful explosion in a bus outside the crowded Ghatkopar railway station. The blast ripped through the bus damaging its rear portion. Banned SIMI was suspected to be behind the blasts with the police arresting more than six persons in this case.

Dec 06, 2002: 25 people were injured in a bomb blast at McDonalds fast food restaurant at Mumbai Central Railway Station. The bomb was planted in the air conditioner duct. It was suspected to be a crude bomb.

Jan 27, 2003: At least 30 people were injured when a bomb planted on a bicycle went off throwing splinters of sharp nails outside Vile Parle railway station. The explosion occurred near a shopping complex in the evening hours. On the ill-fated day, all the shops in the area were closed for a weekly holiday. Later, a woman succumbed to injuries.

Mar 13, 2003: A powerful bomb blast shattered a bogie of a local train at Mulund railway station in the peak hours killing 11 people and injuring more than 65. This was the most powerful serial explosion.

In these blasts, the hand of SIMI was suspected and more than 20 people had been arrested under Prevention of Terrorism Act. They were charged with waging a war against the nation and participating in a conspiracy to create a series of blasts.

Among the accused is former secretary of SIMI Saquib Nachan. The police have already filed a charge sheet against him and others.
