China court convicts 39 of spreading ethnic extremism

Beijing, May 21 (IANS): Chinese courts have found 39 people guilty of spreading online terrorism videos and other crimes in China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, a high court statement said Wednesday.

The convicts were also found guilty of organising, leading and participating in terrorist organisations, inciting ethnic hatred, ethnic discrimination and illegally making guns, China Daily reported citing the court statement.

The defendants, who were charged in 16 separate cases, were tried in six prefectures of the autonomous region Tuesday.

Those who are involved in terrorist activities will be severely punished under the law, said the statement.
