Bihar CM Nitish Kumar quits over JD-U debacle

Patna, May 17 (IANS): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned Saturday, taking moral responsibility for the rout of his Janata Dal-United in the state in the general elections.

"I led the party's campaign. I take moral responsibility for the election result," a visibly despondent Nitish Kumar told the media persons.

He submitted his resignation to Governor D.Y. Patil after the JD-U won only two of the 40 Lok Sabha seats from Bihar. In 2009, it won 20 seats in alliance with the BJP.

Nitish Kumar made it clear that he has not recommended the dissolution of the 243-member Bihar assembly. He said that meeting of the legislature party has been scheduled for Sunday.

"We did not get the expected support...(and) there is no doubt that the mandate is for the BJP," said Nitish Kumar, who has been in the saddle since Nov 24, 2005, and won a second term in the 2010 assembly elections.

He added that he has not seen this kind of polarisation in Indian politics. "I hope that the new (central) government keeps the promises made during the campaign."

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP won 22 seats and its allies, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won six and Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) won three seats. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won four, while its ally Congress bagged two and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) managed to win one seat.

Ashok Kumar Singh, a businessman, said: "It is going to be a big set-back for Bihar, which is on development track under Nitish Kumar. I never expected it."

Anant Kumar, a student, said he was shocked at Nitish Kumar's resignation.

"I think he was a victim of caste and communal polarisation in polls as he was only talking about development and asking people to support him for his work," Anant said.

Since the Janata Dal-United fared poorly in the Lok Sabha election, there has been intense speculation the Nitish Kumar government may fall as party legislators would desert him.

Another setback for Nitish Kumar was that then JD-U bagged only one of five assembly seats where by-polls were held along with the Lok Sabha polls. The RJD bagged three seats and the BJP took one.

In the assembly, the JD-U has 118 legislators while the BJP has got 91. RJD is placed third with 22 lawmaker, Congress has 4 and others are 8.

Nitish Kumar, an engineer by education, has been an MP for six terms and has also served as a union minister.

Senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi too had sought the resignation of Nitish Kumar following his party's landslide victory in the Lok Sabha election.

"As chief minister has lost the confidence of people, he should resign with immediate effect owning moral responsibility for the debacle of his party in the state."

Barely two days back, BJP's ally LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan said that after result of the Lok Sabha elections, the Nitish Kumar government would fall as dozens of its legislators would desert him and there will be mid term-polls to the state assembly in November 2014.

Nitish Kumar is the man responsible for:
    - freeing Bihar of mafia & goonda raj
    - turning Bihar into State with highest growth rate of 14% for last 5 yrs
    - making Patna into one of the better modern cities of India
His resignation today is a 'sad day' for all those who believe that Politics shud be Clean & led by Leaders having good Moral values... Perhaps it's a reflection of times & society we are living in where Money, Muscle & Media decides the Winner and Hero in public's minds...

He has no need one but to blame himself. He never had a problem with bjp for the last 17 years. Only when modi was d pm candidate he realized bjp was communal. Truth is he wanted to be the pm after getting a mixed hung verdict. He sank the jdu party for his personal ambitions.

I agree. In fact instead of Modi probably if any one else from BJP had been named as PM candidate also he would have come out of NDA disputing it. Because end of the day he wanted to get that seat. Ironically one the Modi is named as PM candidate he found it easy to come out citing communal image of Modi. But the same strategy proved costly for him and he bit dust. Poor Nitish! Silly boy.

It is good to see sickular Nithish resigned. Now this has made very big dilemma for many other CM's like Siddhu, Chavan, Umar, Gogoi, Akhilesh. Also Sonia, Rahul, Prakash Karat are in spot. Now it is interesting to see who is having little maana maryaade? Kya se kya hogaya. Many Daiji readers commented before election, that if MODI comes to power they will quit commenting on Daiji. Let us see whether they will stick to their promise? Thale kelage kaalu mele maadidru BJP will rule for next 5 years.

The Bihari people themselves do not want good honest development-oriented person to be their Chief Minister, Which is evident from the fact that out of by-poll for Five Assembly seats JDU & BJP won only one seat each, whereas notorious Laloo Prasad Yadav's RJD won Three Seats. This clearly proves that Bihari people themselves want only Criminals and Corrupt persons to Rule their State and good administrator like Nitish have no place in Bihar.

    Hi Ravi,

I dispute with your opinion. Bihar people had reelected Nithish for second time in Bihar in 2010. Nithish was considered the 2nd best CM in country after Modi.

The reason for his debacle is association of himself with CORRUPT CONGIS. FEKU GANDHIS FRIENDSHIP proved him costly. People of Bihar are intelligent.

Mr. Nitish Kumar once a broadminded secular socialist leader, tried to play the communal card when Mr. Modi was projected as PM candidate. Little did he think that the whole nation was behind Modi. He is solely responsible for his party’s debacle.

Agree Mr.John..Nitheesh is a fool..anyhow he is not merging with BJP, he had his indentity which is different from BJP..then why so hurry?..He can choose his course of action after election, he can extend support from outside..He believed Congress & minority vote bank..first of all minority vote bank is big myth, some opportunist cleric make big money fooling politicians..you can not win election just by appeasing minority & ignoring majority..just look at the numbers, who ever targeted MODI ate dust..Congress was dreaming of a mega secular coilation, but where are the allies!! altogether they can not match BJPs UP figure..

When Nitish Kumar took the reins of Bihar in 2005 there was great hope of this man that he will bring back the state to tracks effecte by mafia rule of Lalu.It proved and first tern of Nitish was superb. The second tern was not soluckty for him ans he developed the communal mindedness for the purpose of attaining higher position. This got stengthened when Modi ws nominated as PM candidated for BJP in July last year and event was utilsed by highly ambitious CM Nitish Kumar dreaming to reach Delhi under third front rule.Sonia gave him enough fodder for this dubious thought which resulted a severing the 17 years alliance partnership with NDA,against the wish of his own party men and even NDA chairman Sharad Yadav.Man meets his own grave when the abmitions are culminated with communal mindset. The his downfall in the election is a history resulting his resignation from CM post.Had he been in NDA he would have been in the coveted post of Home Minsister or other top slot in the council of Modis cabinet.
Truely said ...Man proposes..but God disposes....
Ths is the saga of a populor CM who was secular became sickular....

Hope Namo too will keep his words. that what we need for development of Nation. If he can't keep his words, then there is no difference between congress men and him !

People must be responsible for their actions. If Nitish Kumar has not delivered as per their expectations, and they have voted him out, it is just gentlemanly that he resigned. The next government has to surpass the parameter set by Nitish and in case he has set it high, then good, Bihar will be on the way to development.

It must have been disheartening for Nitish to see that, people see caste/communalism and not developmental work while voting and he has allowed them to eat the broth cooked by them.

Very sad to see good leaders are quitting or losing the position in India. This is the high time to come all like minded parties and leaders under one roof (Congress or CPM) to fight with communal party. BJP has its own communal vote bank and other votes all shared with different parties. Most of the states having two regional parties which is helping BJP to get more seats and same thing happened in this LS election. God save India.
