Shuttlers Kashyap, Saina named India captains


New Delhi, May 14 (IANS): Leading shuttlers Parupalli Kashyap and Saina Nehwal were named captains of the Indian teams participating in the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals to be held at the Siri Fort Sports Complex here May 18-25.

"I would like to announce that Kashyap and Saina will be the captains of the Indian teams participating in the event," Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Akhilesh Das Gupta said at a press conference here Wednesday.

India have drawn Malaysia, South Korea and Germany in the Thomas Cup Group C while in the Uber Cup, India have been placed with Thailand, Canada and Hong Kong also in Group C.

This is the first time India is hosting the prestigious biennial event. Starting this year, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) have done away with the qualifiers and the teams have qualified on the basis of the players' rankings.

The Thomas Cup is the World Men's Team Championship while Uber Cup is the women's version.
