Chinese army to intensify anti-graft drive

Beijing, May 5 (IANS): The Chinese military's anti-corruption campaign will continue despite the army having made progress in catching out illegal apartments and vehicles, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) said Monday.

The PLA sent out 18 inspection teams to the general departments of staff, politics, logistics, and armament as well as military area commands at the end of last year, Xinhua quoted the statement as saying. It uncovered undesirable behaviour during the inspection.

The inspection also targeted misuse of secretaries and office attendants for senior military officers and living standards of retired senior officers and their families.

Authorities will now enhance probes into corruption, such as spending public funds on feasts and travel, using public vehicles for private purposes, presenting gifts during holidays, and holding extravagant wedding ceremonies and funerals.

This kind of behaviour must be checked, the military added in the statement.

The PLA launched the anti-graft campaign last year to echo the Communist Party of China's (CPC) drive to clean up undesirable work styles such as hedonism, and extravagance.
