Mid-Day

Mumbai, Jun 21: Around 10 pm Tuesday night, cops from Sahar Airport police station detained three Irani men for being unable to explain the presence of 1 kg of white powder in their luggage.

Problems have multiplied for the cops, as the men, in their 20s, speak only Persian and do not understand either Hindi or English. Till now the police have not found an interpreter.

Cops have also been unable to figure out what the substance is, using conventional methods like sniffing.

Senior Police inspector C K Chavan of Sahar Airport police station said, “It is not clear what the substance is. We shall be sending it to the laboratory for tests.” About the interpreter, he said, “We are hopeful of getting one tomorrow.”

The three men had checked into the airport area at 9.30 pm and were scheduled to catch the 2 am Iran Air flight to Iran.

While screening their luggage, airport staff found the white powder and the cops then took over. Being unable to make any headway because of the language barrier, the cops decided to detain them.
