Art auction raises Rs.five crore for charity

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS): The late M.F. Husain's "Mother Teresa" painting was sold for Rs.1.6 crore at a charity art auction that raised Rs.5 crore from the event here, said organisers Monday.

The Delhi Art Gallery in association with Khushii Foundation, an NGO, organised a fund-raising art auction "Smiles" Sunday, where they were able to sell 40 lots.

Indian contemporary artist Akbar Padamsee's "Untitled" fetched Rs.35 lakh and Kolkata-based Bikash Bhattacharjee's "Untitled" too was sold for Rs.35 lakh.

"This auction has proved that the art collectors have generous hearts and we hope support for our charity auction will continue to grow," said Ashish Anand, director, Delhi Art Gallery.

The money raised would be used for upliftment of the poor and destitute communities in both rural and urban areas in India.
