China's Nanning to clean up environment for gymnastics worlds

Nanning (China), April 12 (IANS): The Environmental Protection Bureau of Nanning has released a plan to guarantee a safe environment as the 45th World Gymnastics Championships to be held here in October.

The plan says that the air quality should be at least "good," with the air quality index (AQI) no more than 100, the quality of drinking water shall reach the proper standard, and no significant environmental accident should break out during the World Gymnastics Championships, reports Xinhua.

The plan put forward measures to prevent environmental accidents from the aspect of atmosphere, water, noise and hazardous wastes.

In 2013, there were over 90 days when the AQI of Nanning did not reach the standard. In order to meet the objectives, 223 industrial enterprises have to suspend production, and 1,004 chimneys that emit waste gas will be renovated during the championships.
