IAAF ratifies Dibaba's 3,000m indoor record

Monaco, April 5 (IANS): Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba's 3,000 metres women's indoor record set in early February has been ratified by IAAF, the world athletics governing body announced on its website.

The 23-year-old Dibaba, sister of Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion Tirunesh, clocked eight minutes, 16.60 seconds to win the women's 3,000m race in the XL-Galan, an IAAF Permit Indoor Meet held Feb 6 in Stockholm, Sweden, reports Xinhua.

The former world indoor record of 8:23.72 was set by Dibaba's countrywoman Meseret Defar Feb 3, 2007 in Stuttgart, Germany.

Dibaba has been enjoying a successful indoor season in 2014 as she also set a 1,500m world indoor record of 3:55.17, which is still pending ratification by IAAF, and raced the fastest two miles in 9:00.48 at the Birmingham Grand Prix.
