Capello signs contract extension with Russia

Moscow, Jan 24 (IANS): Fabio Capello has extended his contract as coach of Russia's national football team till the end of the 2018 World Cup, the country's governing body confirmed Friday.

The 67-year-old Italian, former coach of England, took the position following the resignation of Dutchman Dick Advocaat, whose side suffered group-stage exit at Euro 2012, reports Xinhua.

Capello paced Russia into the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil and his previous deal was supposed to expire at the end of the tournament.

"I'm really happy to continue my work here in Russia. We have great plans for the future and I'll do my best to make Russian fans happy," Capello said on the website of the Russia Football Association.

The 2018 World Cup will be held in Russia.
