Murray beats Roberts to make Australian Open quarters


Melbourne, Jan 20 (IANS): Andy Murray reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6-8), 6-2 victory over lucky loser Stephane Robert of France here Monday.

After racing through the first two sets in just 64 minutes, Murray wasted a couple of match points in the third set and was dragged into a tiebreak, which was won by the Frenchman at 8-6.

After losing his first set of the tournament, the fourth seed raced through the fourth set in 28 minutes to seal a quarterfinal clash with Roger Federer, who beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets.

Robert, who had won just four main draw matches in 10 previous Grand Slam appearances, was the first lucky loser to reach the fourth round at Melbourne Park.
