Brueckner to be adviser of Czech football team

Prague, Jan 8 (IANS): Karel Brueckner, the former Czech national team coach, is set to be named consultant to new Czech coach Pavel Vrba.

Vrba said would like Brueckner to help the team officials with analysis and tactical matters. The Czech Football Association head Miroslav Pelta said he would be glad if Brueckner took the post, reports Xinhua.

"I will be glad if Brueckner agrees with the post and if he is present at the national team's get-togethers," Pelta said.

Brueckner, 74, headed the Czech national team from 2001 to 2008. He has been the most successful national team coach. He took Czech national team to the European Cup semifinal in 2004 and advanced to World Championship two years later, which is the first time for the team since 1990.

Under him, the team was placed second in FIFA's world standings. It also advanced to the European Cup in 2008 when it won its qualification group ahead of Germany.

After the championship, Brueckner left to coach the Austrian national team. He became the consultant of the Czech national team in 2009 when it was briefly headed by Ivan Hasek.
