Australia win 2013 World Cup of Golf

Melbourne, Nov 24 (IANS): Australian golfer Jason Day Sunday claimed the individual tournament of 2013 World Cup and helped his country win the team event as well for the first time in 24 years.

The Australian team had last lifted a World Cup trophy in 1989, reports Xinhua.

Day's teammate Adam Scott and Denmark golfer Thomas Bjorn put Day under huge pressure during the last day of the tournament. However, Day kept his cool on the back nine to claim the individual title.

Thanks to Day and Scott's excellent performance, Australia won the team title at Royal Melbourne, carding 17 under.

The United States were second, trailing Australia by 10 shots. Denmark and Japan came joint third.

The 2013 World Cup of Golf tournament was officially launched Thursday at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club here.
