Special team to look into his antecedents

Gulbarga, Apr 1: The Karnataka police have arrested a suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba operative, Shami Ahmed Shah, here.

He was allegedly planning attacks on vital installations including major irrigation dams and power installations in the region.

Superintendent of Police K. Ramachandra Rao, along with the team that arrested Shah at the Gulbarga railway station on Thursday, told presspersons here on Friday that two hand grenades, a pistol with carbine, six live cartridges with foreign markings, books in Urdu allegedly containing inflammatory material and audio and video cassettes were recovered.

A magistrate remanded him to police custody for 10 days.

During questioning, Shah reportedly told the police that he worked for a brief period in Oman and Saudi Arabia, where he came into contact with the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In 2002, Shah went to Pakistan from Saudi Arabia on a fake passport.

He visited Lahore and Rawalpindi before going to Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir for a 13-month training in a terrorist camp. He came to India in May 2004.

Shah told the police that he worked directly under Pakistan-based Abdul Aziz, in-charge of Lashkar operations in India.
