Referee suspends Chilean league match

Santiago (Chile), Oct 28 (IANS): A Chilean football league match between University of Chile and Catholic University was suspended in the 56th minute when a projectile was launched from the grandstands and hit one of the players.

The match, at Santiago's Nacional stadium with the presence of 45,000 people, Sunday was suspended when the projectile hit midfielder Fernando Meneses, from Catholic University, who are the league leaders and were winning the match 1-0, reports Xinhua.

Meneses was escorted off the field and later referee Enrique Osses decided to suspend the match due to the lack of security.

The game, which was part of the 12th matchday of Apertura tournament, will be completed Monday behind closed doors, the Chilean officials informed later.

"Meneses is under observation, we have an injured player, this is the main issue and this is our main concern. The player was attacked, so first we have to care for him and later see what happens," said Jaime Esteves, president of Catholic University.
