WBC champion to defend her title in Mexico

Kingston (Jamaica), Oct 19 (IANS/CMC): Jamaica’s Alicia Ashley, the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion, will defend her title in Tijuana against Mexico’s Zenny Sotomayer Oct 23.

The fight will be the third title defence for Ashley following victories over Maria Elena Villalobos last year and Panama's Chanttal Martinez earlier this year, reports CMC.

Her reign began in July 2011 after she defeated Christina Ruiz in New York to take home the title.

Ashley’s opponent Sotomayer has a 10-5-1 record, and her last fight was an unsuccessful bid to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight title, losing to the champion Kitty Wilson Castillo.

"I am ready to go," said Ashley, who has a 19-9-1 record.

“I hope that my opponent is, too, as I would like it to be a good fight."
