Hassan Miraz spins Bangladesh U-19 to another victory

Georgetown (Guyana), Oct 15 (IANS/CMC): Skipper Hassan Miraz spun Bangladesh to their third victory over the West Indies and his all-round display gave the visitors a 3-1 lead in the seven-match Under-19 One-Day series.

Fifteen-year-old captain Miraz bowled the West Indies team for 143 with a five-wicket haul, and contributed 27 to the team's win. The Caribbean side earlier scrambled to compile a competitive total but were bowled out for 143 after winning the toss and deciding to bat.

The visitors cruised to victory riding on a half-century stand between Miraz and Nazmul Hossain Shanto to reach 144 for 6. On Friday, they registered a lopsided 198-run win over the West Indies when the home side again collapsed against Bangladeshi spin.

A 64-run stand between Marquino Mindley and Gudakesh Moti-Kanhai provided the brightest sparkle in the West Indies batting.

Mindley top scored with 39 and Moti-Kanhai made 28 but the procession of batsmen to the pavilion continued as Bangladesh spinners exploited the conditions of the wicket at the Everest Cricket Club Ground.

Miraz completed an impressive all-round performance to finish with 5 for 17 while Jubair Hossain supported well with 3 for 25.

The Bangladesh run chase suffered some early setbacks, including the loss of two wickets just before the lunch interval. However, a 69-run partnership between Miraz and Shanto carried them to three runs from victory.

Their victory was slightly delayed by Ramaal Lewis, who was on the verge of a hat-trick after snapping up the wickets of the two leading run scorers off consecutive balls.

Miraz was caught for 27 while Shanto was beaten by a ball which swung back onto his stumps.

Ray Jordan and Lewis each picked two wickets for 24 runs.

Brief scores:

West Indies: 143 (Marquino Mindley 39, Hassan Miraz 5 for 17, Jubair Hossain 3 for 25)

Bangladesh: 144/6 (Nazmul Hossain Shanto 60, Hassan Miraz 27, Ramaal Lewis 2 for 24, Ray Jordan 2 for 24).
