Dortmund blank Marseille in Champions League

Berlin, Oct 2 (IANS): Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways in the Champions League with a 3-0 rout of Olympique de Marseille.

Robert Lewandowski's brace and Marco Reus' free kick goal Tuesday smoothed the way for BVB's crucial victory in group F of Europe's top-flight competition, reports Xinhua.

Both sides were in need of a win as they had lost their group openers. Olympique de Marseille had pleasant associations with the hosts as they defeated the Germans twice to eliminate them from the Champions League.

However, Dortmund impressed from kick-off with their offensively minded strategy to keep uninspired Marseille busy.

The Germans controlled the proceedings on the pitch although "OM" remained dangerous on counters. But it was Dortmund that stunned Marseille with a fast break, following a free kick by the visitors, when Robert Lewandowski tapped in from close range an assist by youngster Erik Durm in the 19th minute.

Dortmund pressed for the second goal but they had to wait until the 52nd minute, as Marco Reus' free kick floated into the back of the net to stagger "OM" goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

The visitors from France were unable to give an answer when Polish international Lewandowski converted a foul play penalty to kill the game 10 minutes ahead of schedule.

"It was a great game by my team. Marseille is a good team we had to put up some resistance to win this game," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said.

Arsenal lead group F followed by Dortmund, Napoli and winless Marseille.
