60 killed as suicide bombers hit historic church in Peshawar

Peshawar, Sep 22 (PTI) : Two suicide bombers struck a historic church here today, killing at least 60 people, including women and children, in the deadliest attack on the minority Christian community in Pakistan's history.

Over 120 others were injured in the attack on All Saints Church at Kohati Gate area of Peshawar. City Commissioner Sahibzada Muhammad Anis said the bombers set off their explosive vests as people were coming out after Sunday mass.

Anis said some 600 to 700 people were inside the church at the time of the blasts. Nearby buildings were damaged by the powerful blasts.

Arshad Javed, Chief Executive Officer of the state-run Lady Reading Hospital, confirmed 60 people, including women and children, were killed and 120 others injured.
The dead included four children aged between three and eight years and a Muslim police official, officials said.

Bomb Disposal Squad chief Shafqat Mahmood said two bombers carried out the attack. Each suicide vest contained an estimated six kilograms of explosives, he said. Footage on television showed the walls of the church were pitted with ball bearings packed into the vests.

Witnesses said they had seen body parts and bloodstained clothes and shoes lying strewn at the site of the attack.

Angry Christians staged a protest at Lady Reading Hospital, where most of the victims were taken. They also blocked the G T Road with the bodies of the dead.

This was the worst attack in Pakistan's history on the Christian minority, which has not been targeted as frequently as other minorities like Shias or Ahmadis.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban and militant groups have been blamed for previous assaults on religious minorities, including Christians.
In March, a Muslim mob attacked a Christian colony in Lahore and torched two churches and over 100 houses. Christians frequently find themselves accused under the controversial blasphemy law.

In March 2002, five persons, including three foreigners, were killed and 45 injured when terrorists attacked a church in the diplomatic enclave of Islamabad.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack on the church, saying "terrorists have no religion and targeting innocent people is against the teachings of Islam".

Sharif said such cruel acts of terrorism "reflect the brutality and inhumane mindset of the terrorists". He expressed solidarity with Christians.

The All Saints Church is one of the oldest in northwest Pakistan and was built in 1883 during the British era. The Kohati Gate area in Peshawar's old quarter has witnessed several militant attacks in recent years though none of them targeted Christians.
The congested Kohati Gate neighbourhood is usually packed with people, mostly women, as the area has several markets and shopping centres. Many Christians live in the vicinity and visit the church for Sunday service in large numbers.

The worshippers were leaving for a distribution of free food outside the church when the suicide bombers struck. Rescue teams rushed to site and security forces cordoned off the area.

Bomb Disposal Squad chief Mahmood said police had found the heads of both bombers and sketches would be prepared soon.

An emergency was declared in hospitals across Peshawar. Officials of Lady Reading Hospital described the condition of 13 injured people as critical. Army officials said 11 people were taken to a military hospital so that they could be provided the best emergency treatment.

Awami National Party leader and former information minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain visited the site of the attack and expressed his sympathies to the Christian community.

The Council for International Religion called for three days of mourning and said all missionary schools and colleges in Peshawar would be closed for three days.
The ANP too called for three days of mourning to express solidarity with Christians.

I do agree with you on certain parts of your comments.

America wants to show the world its supremacy. One of its brutalities was that the war on Iraq under the pretext of Saddam having WMD (weapons of mass destruction)and the war killed thousands of innocents, but later America's claim proved to be false.

But again killing innocents is brutality and a total madness. What is the offence of these people praying in the church and why a retaliation of America's drone attach should be avenged on these innocents?

Hope Pakistan Government will find out the group behind this heinous act and award the culprits capital punishment.

Four years after Pakistan became separate in 1947, there was a census in Pak and at that time Christians were 5% of the Population in their Sindh & Punjab provinces and about 4% were Christians in East Pakistan ( present Bangaladesh).
Now in Pak 5% is reduced to just 2% and in Bangla also christians are now just 2% confined to only Chittagong Hill tracts. So what happened to other 3%?

    @Ravi Shenava..

Your observation on the % age of christians in PAK and Ban'desh from 1947 to now "maybe" right. However, the inference is definitely wrong.

While the number of christians would have increased gradually over the years, the overall population in pakistan has definitely increased exponentially. So, the denominator being a larger number, the %age now works out much smaller than in 1947.

So, the 3% has not gone anywhere. It is just that the population of christians has not grown at the same rate as muslims/other religions over the years.

THE ONLY ONE WAY TO STOP THESE TERROR ATTACKS AROUND THE WORLD, IS THE IDEOLOGY OF HATE MUST BE REPLACED WITH THE IDEOLOGY OF LOVE. PERIOD.

Every time an attack takes place condemnation flow, but just in a few days or at times even hours there is another similar attack somewhere in the World, and this cycle that has been taking place for centuries non stop repeats itself all over.

I am not talking about ordinary people like you and me, but from the leaders in the highest seats of religion and government to come out openly and speak out and tell their fellow religionist that they have got all their belief all wrong, wrong, wrong. More importantly parents should teach their children love and peaceful coexistence and they should shun violence in every shape and form.

Do we condemn in the way like Myanmar revenge attack here in India by public riots, damaging public property. That’s a barbarism. Thats not suits to Christianity
We can condemn only through democratic & diplomatic way
Our country is secular and democratic unlike uncivilized Pakistan which based on shariah

Christianity based on love & humanity through Christ so there is no room for violence or damaging public property while expressing anger or condemnation
