Nigerian army to groom athletes for 2016 Olympics

Lagos, Sep 22 (IANS): The Nigerian Army has said it is planning to raise athletes with medal prospects who will represent the country at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.

According to Brig. Gen. Shehu Yusuf, director of physical training and sports for the army, they would concentrate on the combat sports, Xinhua reported Saturday.

He said the army had selected some good athletes from a just-concluded combat competition held in central north Kaduna State, to undergo some intensive training.

The army sports director said that the Army's boxing team would begin camping in October in Lagos, for early preparation with other combat sports, later in the year.
