Nigerian coaches urged to raise budding talent

Lagos, Sep 22 (IANS): Coaches at the grassroots level in Nigeria have been appealed to raise budding talent in sports while ensuring genuine talent gets opportunity to emerge.

Ibrahim Mohammed, president of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), gave the advice in Lagos Saturday, saying it was only through such an approach that genuine talent could emerge, Xinhua reports.

He said coaches should be dedicated and avoid fielding already established athletes, in place of the grassroots talent.

Mohammed urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to come to the aid of the sports federations by organising regular refresher courses for their coaches, for better performance.

The official told reporters that the NSSF would continue to play a prominent role in the discovery of potential talent, who would be nurtured to stardom.
