Weir, Fraser-Pryce take Diamond League titles


Brussels, Sep 7 (IANS/CMC): Jamaican sprinter Warren Weir won this season’s Diamond League 200-metre title and with it the $40,000 first prize.

The Olympic and World Championship silver medallist confirmed his victory by winning the men’s 200-metre at the season ending Diamond League meeting in Brussels Friday, reports CMC.

Weir clocked 19.87 seconds to cross the line ahead of his Jamaican teammate Nickel Ashmeade, who recorded a season-best 19.93 seconds.

American Walter Dix was third in 20.12, also a season-best.

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s sprint queen Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce clocked a sizzling 10.72 seconds to smash the meet record and win the women’s 100-metre.

The Moscow World Championships triple gold medallist finished well clear of American Alexandria Anderson who was second in 10.97.

With the victory, Fraser-Pryce has added the 100m Diamond League title to her 200m title won last month.

Fraser-Pryce gets $40,000 for each title.

The other two Jamaicans Carrie Russell and Kerron Stewart finished third and fourth respectively.

Russell clocked 10.99 and Stewart 11.19.
