Mangalore, Feb 15: The silver jubilee celebration of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) held in Bangalore on Tuesday February 14 has invited criticism from several quarters. Udupi MP Manorama Madhwaraj has strongly opposed the celebrations.

“NMPT was established at Panambur in Mangalore 25 years ago and thousands of people lost their homes and property. Hundreds of employees work at the NMPT and they have been deprived participation in the silver jubilee celebrations,” she said.

The celebrations held in a five star hotel in Bangalore have also received criticism from the Dakshina Kannada District Kannada Sahitya Parishat. The Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura said that it’s wrong on the part of NMPT to hold celebrations in Bangalore while it enjoys all the natural resources of Mangalore and Dakshina Kannada.

Manorama has already written to Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu regarding the same.
