Govt mulling proposal to shut petrol pumps at night

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI): The government is considering various proposals including shutting petrol pumps in the night to taper fuel demand as it looks at ways to cut the massive oil import bill, Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily said today, drawing a sharp reaction from BJP.

"There are various options and ideas that have been floated. Shutting petrol pumps during night is one of them. But we have not decided. It is just a proposal," Moily told PTI from Bangalore.

His ministry plans to launch a massive fuel conservation drive from September 16 to cut fuel demand by 3 per cent and save an estimated Rs 16,000 crore or USD 2.5 billion in forex outgo.

The oil import bill is being trimmed to bring down current account deficit.

"Shutting petrol pump is an idea that has come to us. We have not adopted it. It is not my view," Moily said.

Reacting sharply, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said, "What is petrol pump,? Government will close the country... Won't the people fill their car fuel tanks in the morning. This is a strange move by Moily".

If the Manmohan Singh government has run out of ideas to tackle the economic mess, it can take suggestions from the BJP, he said.

Oil Secretary Vivek Rae said there was no plan before the ministry to order petrol pumps in cities to remain shut from 8 pm to 8 am to curb demand for petrol and diesel.

The Minister said Petroleum Conservation and Research Association (PCRA) under his ministry will from September 16 launch a 6 week campaign to promote conservation of petrol, diesel and LPG.

Moily had also written a detailed note to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on shaving off upto USD 20 billion out of the USD 144.293 billion oil import bill of 2012-13. The August 30 note does not talk of shutting petrol pumps in the night but details out conservation campaign as well as raising oil imports from Iran to cut import bill.

Moily said we are planning many austerity measures and urged people to save fuel.

I did not support Closing petrol pump of keeping opening at the night. We are commenting on the proposal. You may tell that Government has keep open Ration shops because people has to eat at night and they keep open banks like wise so many facilities. The requirement of the people are unending . Even people want to buy medicine in the night so the Government will tell one pharmacy in the area should kept open, but Government can’t force all the Bank, Ration shops, or pharmacies kept open to facilitate the people. Please note that if people knows that the particular shop/pharmacy will close at 8 pm they will try to buy before time.

To control some of the unwanted things the Government has to make some changes. Some IT Engineers were in our Bank to implement some new system. In Dubai even a watchmen, messenger are having their own cars. But in Hongkong it is not possible, because Government has implemented following charges so people were compelled to use public transport. In Honkong a small car parking charges will be 22 dollars per hour, registration will be dollars 5000/- and Driving license will be 600 dollars plus car insurance. so people are compelled to use public transport. In Singapore if you throw your garbage improper way you will be penalized by dollars 200/-. But in India, a normal person is having car and they will throw garbage in river, sea or any place. To curtail some expenditure Government has to do some changes but by not harming the people.

My country will remain poor if such ideas implemented and such politicians rule this country. what a shame... why can't they take opinion from the people or from some knowledged persons.. I don’t understand. Here is better idea - Build good quality roads, and infrastructure and that will lead to less petrol consumption, less accidents and faster safer travel, less maintenance for vehicles too which all leads to development. But I don’t think this will ever happen till our govt. officials become clean.

What else you can expect from a Govt. bureaucracy where 90% ed from reservation!! Bunch of donkeys led by super donkey.......Better to close Petroleum ministry itself rather petrol pumps.Since Petroleum prices are controlled by market directly then what purpose ministry is for. Is it just to calculate how much losses made by petroleum companies .... which is always quoted by minister in press conferences. I belive that petroleum companies can better control their losses directly, thus NO NEED OF PETROLEUM MINISTERY IN INDIA. JAI HIND

IDIOTS in Congress. Put import duty of LCD TV as if 1 million TV's are imported every month. But closing petrol pumps at night is like turning off the exhaust fan in the kitchen at night. Real Idiots.
Ok, I would like to know what would NAMO do in this case(Without taking ruling partys name) with a direct answer.
Best thing to do would be, A campagin where on a Sunday all citizens don't use their vehicles and travel in public transport.
Like the comment if you want me as the next PM.

Please shut down Night-clubs, Night-Bars, Hukka-parlours, & Resorts after 10 PM till next day 7 AM. Automatically night traffic will come down sharply and petrol will be saved. simultaneously Crimes will also come down drastically.
Please also take steps to ease traffic Jams in Metros, which will save enormous fuel as well as reduce Pollution.

With each passing day, the central government is committing blunders. What kind of thinking is this?? Will any sane person come up with such stupid Idea?? Imagine what will happen you are travelling long distance overnight and say you run out of fuel??
Each passing day congress government is making our lives difficult and I find it surprising that people blindly support such a party and its anti people policies.

Very good points friend. Few people are also blind to support them blindly. What do you think about Jossey, Ismail, Joseph, Prem, Lydia, Reshma, Kukkikatte? They don't have any vision for the country.

Vidhwaan thinks petrol pumps are like bars,,, if you close them in the night people will forget it in the morning...

Make vehicles more fuel efficient, increase domestic crude production, make roads better, reduce traffic jams amongst other Vidhwaan.....

Also stop hovering in your constituency with an eye over next parlimentary elections...reversing rivers to make people happy and what not...

Rationing of Petrol and diesel will be the next step if effective control and action not taken by our government. The growing demand for fuel and the raise of import bill taken the nation to a big fall. Why we need 3 big oil companies to import oil?Why can't they merged in to one?Do you believe that there is no enough crude oil in Indian soil?Where there is a will, there is a way..We can produce natural gas to reduce the use of this import. There is solar power and there is this and that can be tried at least. It is well said"something is better than nothing". There is no shortage for scientist in India. We don't want to do that, because we loose commission on import?UNLESS AND UNTIL WE HAVE NO ALTERNATE FOR PETROL THE INFLATION WILL NOT STOP US BURNING.
