Samanvaya Press Release

Mangalore, Feb 10: Rev. Fr Bernard D’ Souza, born on 11-03-1936, ordained a priest on 03-12-1962 and died on 04-02-2006 was a versatile personality with indomitable courage, deep sense of justice, effective preacher, builder, orator, progressive thinker and a visionary.  His contribution to the field of education was immense.  For his valuable services in the field of education within the diocese of Mangalore in general and for his being the convener of Educational Unit of Samanvaya Trust in particular, the trust known for its Social Development activities in and around Mangalore since last 7 years, declared open         

Fr Bernard D’ Souza Memorial Education Fund of raising Rs 25 lakhs on 09-02-2006 at Bejai Parish Hall in collaboration with the financial assistance of the well wishers of late Fr Bernard.  The fund was declared open by Rev. Fr Harold D’ Souza, Parish Priest of Mukka and bother of late Fr Bernard, by handing over the first receipt for Rs 10,000/- to Rev. Dr Ronald Cutinha, the director of Samanvaya in the presence of over 500 people gathered in the hall after the weekly mind mass of Fr Bernard.  He wished for the speedy growth of the Fund. 

Rev Dr Ronald Cutinha explained the objectives of the fund as:

1.      Scholarships to poor talented students
2.      Conducting educational trainings and competitions
3.      Supporting formation of new educational institutions or extension of old ones
4.      Felicitating the deserved persons in education field.

He appealed the people to contribute generously to this noble cause.  He also appealed to Fr Bernard’s students and well wishers within India and abroad to send their contribution to “Fr Bernard D’ Souza Memorial Education Fund”, S.B. A/C No. 2290, Indian Overseas Bank, Padav Branch, Mangalore – 575 004. “The same will be acknowledged.  Those individuals or institutions who contribute Rs. 1 lakh and above will be considered as the Patrons of this education fund” he said.

Msgr. Fred V. Pereira the Vicar General led the people into prayer and consoled the bereaved family members and well wishers.

People appreciated the initiative taken by Samanvaya Trust to continue the thinking of   Fr Bernard and to assist the needy in the educational field by contributing their mite.
