Dortmund beat Bremen 1-0 in Bundesliga

Berlin, Aug 24 (IANS): Robert Lewandowski's winner secured Borussia Dortmund their third win in as many games to open the third round of Bundesliga football.

Juergen Klopp's men staged a powerful performance against Bremen to extend their unbeaten run Friday. Dortmund wasted a bunch of golden opportunities throughout the match, reports Xinhua.

The hosts seized the initiative from the kickoff as Werder Bremen kept all their players behind the ball to defend deep in their territory. Thus, the 80,645 spectators at the Signal Iduna Park got to see one-way soccer.

The visitors staged well-positioned defence but yet they were hapless in the 36th minute when Jakub Blaszczykowski rattled the bar from 16 metres following a counter. Dortmund controlled the match even so they failed to break the deadlock despite all their chances during the half time.

Things changed at the second half when Dortmund's top striker Lewandowski scored the opener to comfort coach Klopp in the 55th minute. The Polish international tapped in a diagonal pass by Marco Reus from very close range.

Dortmund continued their run on Bremens bulwark but all their efforts remained unrewarded until the end of the game.

Bremens new arrival Franco di Santo almost punished Dortmund's wastefulness but goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller defused his shot on target three minutes before the final whistle.

"We were unable to come off against Dortmunds pressure. We still have a lot to do," Bremen coach Robin Dutt said after the first loss.

The following matches are scheduled for Saturday: Bayern host Nuremberg, Leverkusen see Monchengladbach, Hannover face Schalke, Hoffenheim meet Freiburg, Mainz encounter Wolfsburg and newly promoted Berlin clash with Hamburg.
