One held, four identified in Mumbai gangrape

Gangraped journalist undergoes surgery, stable

Mumbai, Aug 23, 2013 (IANS):
The woman photojournalist who was brutally gangraped Thursday underwent surgery Friday, said a spokesperson for the Jaslok Hospital where she was admitted.

The victim, who was gangraped in the deserted Shakti Mills Compound in Mahalaxmi late Thursday, is able to speak though she is still in a state of mental shock.

"She has been under treatment since last night. She underwent a minor surgical procedure today (Friday) and now her condition has improved and stabilized. We expect a speedy recovery," the spokesperson told mediapersons here this evening.

The woman, working as an intern photojournalist with an English magazine, was attacked  along with her male colleague when they were on a late evening assignment inside the sprawling Shakti Mills Compound.

They were confronted by five people who allegedly first assaulted and tied up the male colleague, and later gangraped the woman in thick undergrowth of the mill compound.
Police learnt of the incident after the duo reached the hospital where they were admitted for treatment last night.

Claiming to have cracked the case by nabbing one accused and having identified the other culprits, Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said the others would be nabbed soon.
According to Singh, the accused are in their early 20s and live in the vicinity of the abandoned mill.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan announced that the state government will bear all the medical expenses of the victim and extend all possible help to her family.

One held, four identified in Mumbai gangrape

Mumbai, Aug 23 (IANS): One person has been arrested while four people have been identified for their involvement in Thursday's brutal gangrape of a woman photojournalist whose cries for help went unheard in an abandoned mill, police said here Friday.

Describing the incident as "horrific", Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh told mediapersons that the remaining four people would be arrested soon.

"Twenty teams of the local police and Crime Branch have been formed and sketches of the accused have also been released," Singh told the packed media gathering.

The incident came barely five days after an American woman was attacked and robbed in a suburban local train, raising questions over the safety and security of women in the city.

The photojournalist was on an assignment along with a male colleague in the abandoned Shakti Mills Compound, near Mahalaxmi railway station, when the attack took place.

Recounting the incident based on the statements of the two victims, Singh said that two men first confronted the duo alleging that they were 'trespassing' on railway property. Later, they called three other accomplices inside the ruins of the factory.

Claiming to question them, one of them tied up the male colleague with a belt and took the woman away from there -- about 20 feet away behind thick undergrowth.

There, the accused allegedly raped the woman, Singh said.

The 22-year old girl, who suffered grievous internal injuries, has been admitted to the Jaslok Hospital along with her colleague and both are in a state of shock.

Her cries for help went unheard in the sprawling mill compound at that late hour and the men -- all said to be in their 20s -- fled after committing the crime.

The police learnt of the incident only after the victim was admitted to hospital.

Home Minister R.R. Patil visited the two victims undergoing treatment at Jaslok Hospital and enquired about their condition.

"This is a very serious matter and we have taken note of it. We shall arrest the accused soon," he told the media.

The police commissioner said the breakthrough was made following a statement given by the victim's male colleague who was present at the time of the incident.

"While one person has been nabbed, four others involved in the incident have been identified and further investigations are underway. They are believed to be living in the vicinity ... further probe is on," he said.

Though the police have identified all the accused, the police commissioner declined to reveal their names.

The incident has led to a furore around the country and also echoed in parliament where it was raised in the Rajya Sabha by Bharatiya Janata Party member Smriti Irani.

In Mumbai, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, while strongly condemning the incident, said it was a blot on the fair image of the state and all efforts would be made to book the culprits.

"The state government will bear all the medical expenses of the victims and also extend all possible help to their family members," said Chavan.

Taking serious cognizance of the incident, the Mumbai Press Club and other media and social organizations gathered for a protest at the Hutatma Chowk in south Mumbai Friday afternoon.

Another shameful incident for the country. Although Kudos to Mumbai Police for nabbing one culprit but I feel for the young lady photographer. For such heinous crime, no sympathy should be shown to the rapists and immediately they must be punished. Otherwise after few months people will forget and so called activists will cry in favor of criminals. If these rapists survive then many persons will lose their life and many women again will be victimized. As per the news one criminal told he murdered already one person. Are we helpless in front of the criminals? I think definitely no.

In this case of Mumbai Journalist Rape case and also regarding Delhi's Nirbhaya case the National News channels (Hindi & English TV)are hyper active and people have taken to streets all over India due to provocation by TV channels.
But in the case of our Manipal Rape Case of Medical student, the same National Media were totally unconcerned as if Manipal is beyond Sikkim in China, why ? South Indians are not Human beings?

    BROTHER Sunil,
I am sorry for my level if it has hurt you.
But even after 100 years you will have many more journalists like this and many more drunk and erect youth like the ones who are at fault.
When you are closing in on a snake it is foolish to imagine that it may not bite you.
    Prudence has no alternative.

    Dear leslie fernandes, Udupi
You are ONLY asked to comment on the article. Nobody has asked you to say 'who is at fault opr not'. Now that you have decided to say the journalist or victim is at fault clearly shows your LEVEL. FYI- Even after 100 years in this case The truth and fact is the only person / people at fault are the group of men who have raped the woman.

This is once again invitation to trouble.
Never wander in unknown territories without sufficient protection.
    Humans are often animals.
I find the journalists at fault because they never had a plan B for impending danger.
5 drunk men can be there anywhere in the thick of night.
It is for us to decide whether we want to be raped or killed or be happy and alive.
I still remember the stupid Swiss couple.
In fact the same can happen in US or UK or UAE or anywhere.

Even i feel that male journalist is little at fault. He should not have taken such risk of venturing to such a isolated place along with a female.

    Leslie, Shailesh and Others:
It's our Law and Judiciary system which is at fault here not the citizens of India. People know that there are no consequences for such heinous crimes.
We dream of becoming a super power, yet people commit crimes without any fear of being caught/punished. Time to wake up.
