Tottenham Hotspur blank Dinamo Tbilisi in Europa League play-off

Tbilisi, Aug 23 (IANS): A solo run by Andros Townsend 12 minutes into play and two of his assists helped Tottenham Hotspur earn a 5-0 win in Tbilisi in the first leg of the 2013-2014 Europa League playoff round.

With five unanswered goals Thursday, the Spurs now look set to duplicate their 1973 triumph over Dinamo Tbilisi. Back then, the Spurs tied their away match 1-1 at Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi before winning 5-1 at White Hart Lane in London in the then UEFA Cup third round, reports Xinhua.

Brazilian international Paulinho, who earlier scared the Georgian goalie - Giorgi Loria - with an over-the-bar shot in the 10th minute, headed in his first goal for the Spurs in the 44th minute from a Andros Townsend's cross.

Also with Andros Townsend involved, Spurs' other new addition - Spanish striker Roberto Soldado - found the net in the 58th minute to seal the game well away for the visitors.

Danny Rose scored a bonus fourth goal in the 65th minute, three minutes before Soldado found the net a second time, this time set up by Spurs's new acquisition - Nacer Chadli from Belgium.

Tottenham Hotspur meet Dinamo Tbilisi in the second leg Thursday.
