India's Anjana Thamke wins 800 metres gold at Asian Youth Games


Nanjing (China), Aug 22 (IANS): Fifteen-year old Anjana Thamke won India's third gold medal at the Asian Youth Games by setting the fastest time in the girls' 800 metres final here Thursday.

Anjana set a personal best time of two minutes 11.47 seconds, winning the race by almost three seconds. Jogindr Savinder Kaur of Malaysia came second with 2:14.14 while Sri Lanka's N Dilhani Fernando secured bronze with 2:15.72.

Anjana is mentored by Anglian Medal Hunt's athletics coach Vijender Singh.

Squash player Kush Kumar got India's first gold in the tournament.

Indians are participating as Independent Olympic Athletes as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
