Dubai, Feb 4: The Indian Women’s Tennis team from Dubai spearheaded by Mangalorean sporting star and dynamic businesswomen from Dubai Shoba Mendonca were the runner-up at the 17 Nations Cup organised by Al Nasr Leisureland, Dubai under the patronage of H H Sheikh Hasher Al Maktoum.


The tournament, which concluded on February 3, 2006, saw the decisive victory of the UK team against the Indian team, which comprised of team members Vidya Manghnani, Crystal Pereira, Sarala Menon and Mekhala Benny.

A total of six nations represented at the tournament, which included a team from United Kingdom, India, United Arab Emirates, Philippines, Poland and Syria.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Shobha Mendonca, though disappointed from the defeat confessed that the contest was very tough and the team was privileged to get to the finals. Although the girls played extremely well, the fighting spirit fell short the mark.

In the men’s event Kuwait won against the UAE 'A' team pushing them to the runners up title.
Abdul Khader of Al Nasr Lesuireland distributed the prizes.
