Fred ban suspended pending appeal

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 4 (IANS): Brazil striker Fred will play for Fluminense against Ponte Preta Sunday after a local sports tribunal agreed to suspend a four-game Campeonato Brasileiro ban pending an appeal.

The 29-year-old had been handed the penalty Friday after being found guilty of recklessly striking Vasco da Gama midfielder Jomar with an elbow July 21. But Saturday's decision means the former Lyon forward is free to play until an appeal hearing is held, likely to to be later this month, reports Xinhua.

After using Twitter to express his anguish at the tribunal's original decision, Fred opted to keep silent Saturday.

Fluminense, the reigning Brazilian champions, are currently 12th in the Brasileirao standings with just 12 points from 10 matches.
