Spain claim women's water polo title at worlds


Barcelona, Aug 3 (IANS): Spain beat Australia 8-6 to win the gold medal in the women's water polo final at the Bernal Picornell Pool at the World Swimming Championships here.

It is the first gold for Spain at the event and it is also the first time for a host country to win the women's water polo title in the championships, reports Xinhua.

From the start of the match Friday, Spain looked confident and were good in their defence, especially goalkeeper Laura Ester, who blocked a penalty.

Hungary took bronze after beating Russia 10-8.

Spain won the silver at the London Olympics when they were defeated by the US in the final while Australia claimed bronze.
