Mangalore, Jan 26: The issue of the merger of public sector banks must pass through a public debate, opined Mangalore MP D V Sadananda Gowda on Wednesday. 

Speaking at the fourth all India conference of the BMS supported Canara Bank Worker's Organisation at Sanganikethan, he said that the present proposal of merger of public sector banks will lead to creation of unemployment. Apart from this, the merger will have its effect on the nations economic and social development, he warned. Thus a public debate wherein the trade unions and general public are permitted to express their opinions must be facilitated, the MP said.

He further assured of initiating discussion on components like pension and appointment and proving jobs on humanitarian grounds in the next parliamentary sessions.

The trade unions, he said should work towards the welfare of the society and not be entangled with politics of the nation.

Kukke Subrahmanya math head Vidyaprasannateertha Swami inaugurated the programe.

Circle office, Mangalore deputy general manager T Damodar Pai, BMS all India secretary Ravi Raman, National Organisation of Bank Workers general secretary K R Poonja, BMS former president and financial sector trade unions co-ordinator Hasubhai Daveje, Canara Bank Officers' Organisation general secretary B K Irwatharaya, Canara Bank workers Organisation president D K Bajpai and CBWO general secretary Mohan K were present on the occasion.
