Mangalore, Jan 20: David alias Boxer alias Shaji alias Asif, an accomplice of a Middle East-based underworld don was killed in a police encounter near Morgan's Gate here on Thursday January 19 night.

He was wanted by Kerala as well as DK and Udupi police in many cases.  On Thursday night sleuths of Anti-Rowdy Squad led by inspector P A Hegde received a tip-off that David was to pass through Morgans Gate area on his bike.  Accordingly, the police were waiting for him in two separate vehicles.

David came to the spot at 11.30 pm.  But when the police asked him to stop the bike, he raced ahead without stopping.  The police gave him a chase in their jeep.  As he tried to speed, David fell on the road after his bike skidded.  Yet, he tried to flee, while firing at the police with his pistol.  At this point, police too fired at him.  One of the bullets pierced through head and he died on the spot.  One of the bullets fired by David had hit the police jeep in which inspector P A Hegde was following him.

David had been associated with the said underworld don for long.  He has been the prime accused in many murder attempts in and around the city over the last few months.  In this connection the police had arrested 8 accomplices of the said underworld don including Dharmendra Shetty, the owner of Shetty Traders at Hampankatta.
