Schalke hire Mainz's Szalai

Berlin, Jun 28 (IANS): Mainz striker Adam Szalai joined league rival Schalke until June 2017.

The 'Knappen' reinforce their offence as the 25-year-old Hungarian international received jersey No.28 before he put pen to paper on a four-year contract Thursday, reports Xinhua.

Szalai played three years (2010-2013) for Mainz where he netted 21 goals in 79 appearances. Apart from that he is, since 2009, part of the Hungary national football team where he scored seven goals in 16 caps.

"Adam Szalai in an excellent striker who showed good performances in Mainz. The past season indicated that we need a lot of good players. Competition is important to reach our objectives. Adam is a young player with a strong character who wants to achieve a lot with Schalke," general manager Horst Heldt said.

Schalke completed the last season in fourth position with 55 points to secure the UEFA Champions League playoffs berth.
