Weir, Fraser-Pryce star as Jamaica national meet ends

Kingston, Jun 25 (IANS/CMC): Olympic bronze medallist Warren Weir won the 200 metres in spectacular fashion to bring an exciting climax to the National Championships at the National Stadium.

Weir registered his new personal best of 19.79 seconds in the absence of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake on Sunday night.

Nickel Ashmeade was second in 20.06 seconds, with Jason Livermore, who made the team to the Moscow World Championships in the 4x100m relay, taking third and cementing his place, running 20.13 seconds.

"This was no fluke, this one is for real," Weir told reporters after the race.

Running in lane six, Weir came off the curve in front and never trailed, despite a late surge from Ashmeade.

Meantime, Olympic silver medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce sped to victory in the 200 metres with a world leading 22.13 second.

Fraser-Pryce skipped the 100 metres having received a bye to the World Championships.

MVP runners swept the top three places in the event as Sherone Simpson was second in 22.55 seconds, and Anniesha McLaughlin returned to the squad for the World Championships by placing third in 22.58 seconds.
