Mangalore, Jan 11: A person who had prepared and given fake passport to the hijacker involved in Kandahar plane hijack of 1999, has now once again been arrested by Pandeshwar police for trying to avail another passport based on fake information.

The arrested Mehamood Kukkar Mammu Haji alias Mehammud Mahammad Sayyad (44) is a native of Kerala but currently a resident of Attavar here. He was arrested by Pandeshwar police inspector Venkatesh Prasanna and was produced before the court.  However, he was later released on bail.

He was earlier arrested by Mumbai police and was behind the bars for one year for preparing and giving fake passport to one Mahmad Sayyad, a prime accused in the 1999 hijack of Indian Airline flying between New Delhi - Kathmandu.  The plane had been hijacked and taken to Kandahar in Afghanistan.

However, after a year Mehammud was released on bail but the case is still pending against him as interrogation is still on.  Now he has been trapped while trying to avail a passport by providing fake details about himself.  Since he currently resides at Attavar, the passport enquiry had to be carried out by the Pandeshar police.

During the enquiry, the police came to know about the applicant’s earlier nexus with Mumbai .  So they contacted the Mumbai police.  This gave them vital clues about his involvement in the Kandahar hijack and the subsequent imprisonment and the pending case.  So the police immediately arrested him.

During the subsequent interrogation, he told the police that he has been providing fake passports in the past.  A lot of persons have availed fake passports from him over the years.  He is a native of Kerala but was residing in Mumbai for more than a decade.  After being released on bail in the Kandahar hijack case, he had shifted himself to Mangalore and was residing in a flat in Presidium Apartments at Attavar.

He has also been running a real estate business "Pride Builders and Developers" in Mangalore.  The police are pursuing the case.
