Flamengo sack coach Jorginho

Rio de Janeiro, Jun 7 (IANS): Flamengo have sacked coach Jorginho after less than three months in charge of Brazil's biggest soccer club.

Thursday's decision came just hours after the Rio de Janeiro outfit slipped to second-last spot in Brazil's Serie A championship standings with a 1-0 defeat to Nautico, reports Xinhua.

"Flamengo thanks Jorginho for his services over 14 matches and wishes him the best in his career," the club said in a statement.

The six-time league champions are winless from the first four rounds of the Brazilian Serie A season. It follows a disappointing campaign in the Rio de Janeiro state league, which led to the March sacking of Jorginho's predecessor Dorival Junior.

Jorginho, the first-choice right-back in Brazil's 1994 World Cup-winning team, insisted he had no ill-feelings towards his former employer.

"I will take with me the good times and the bad," the 48-year-old said. "I did my best and I gave them my heart but football is about results."

Flamengo are yet to make a pronouncement on Jorginho's replacement but the position has been linked with former Brazil coach Mano Menezes.
