Abhinav Bindra's name recommended for Bharat Ratna

New Delhi, May 13, (PTI) : The only Indian to win an individual gold medal in Olympics, shooter Abhinav Bindra, has been recommended for the Bharat Ratna -- the country's highest civilian honour -- by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI).

On August 11, 2008, the 30-year-old reserved marksman from Zirakpur, Punjab scripted history when he shot an incredible 700.5 to clinch the yellow metal in the Beijing Olympic Games.

"We have recommended Abhinav Bindra's name as he is India's only individual gold medal winner in Olympics. What he has achieved for the country in the biggest sporting event is for all of us to see," said NRAI adviser Baljeet Singh Sethi.

"This will not only encourage upcoming shooters but also youngsters aspiring to make a career of out of sports. This will be very good for sports," the official added.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister's Office, the NRAI made the recommendation.

"We hereby recommend the name of Abhinav Bindra, Olympian gold-medallist who created history by winning the first individual gold medal in 2008 Olympic Games held at Beijing. This is the only gold medal by an Indian athlete in Olympic Games and deserves the highest award of the land," NRAI president Raninder Singh said in the letter.

None of Bindra's shots in the final dropped below 10.0 on that historic August afternoon.

"He won the individual gold medal and the team silver during the 12 Asian Shooting Championship held in Doha and was also a part of the Indian contingent that won participated in Olympic Games at London in 2012.

"We strongly recommend that he may be conferred the 'Bharat Ratna Award' for his excellent achievement in sports," Raninder added.

Bindra's was also India's first gold medal in Olympics since the 1980 edition in Moscow, where the men's field hockey team won the top prize.

Originally, sportspersons were not eligible for the Bharat Ratna but the criteria was altered in 2011 after there was a clamour for Sachin Tendulkar to be honoured with it even though the star cricketer has not yet been conferred the award.

I believe we should not lower the standards for the Bharat Ratna award.
Bharat Ratna should be awarded to the 'Outstanding amongst Outstanding Indians' according to what I believe or else someday say even BS Yeddyurappa will claim to want the Bharat Ratna.

Dear readers, Mr Bindra is the only person ever from India to have achieved the feat of winning the gold medal in an Olympic sport so he deserves to get a Bharath Rathna. We have over the years promoted cricket which is competitively played by only a dozen odd countries. We need to shine in other sports too. Except for Australia & England the cricket playing countries have not excelled in Athletics and other Sports.I am sure if Cricket had been competitively played in countries like China, Russia, U.S.A, Germany etc,We would not have chances of winning the world cup.So promote Sports & games which are played worldwide. However I would have been much happier if an Indian won olympic gold medal in a sport which is physically demanding. Even in future we have chances of winning olympic medals in shooting, archery etc which are physically less demanding. Howewer i appreciate the jury for having ed Mr Bindra because they are giving recognition for a sport that is actively participated by more than a hundred countries.

Both Bindra and the Bharath Ratna title are defamed by this foolish step of NRAI.

    DEAR ERIC/JAIMINI,
THIS HIGHEST HONOUR HAS BECOME A MERE JOKE.
    LOOK INTO THE PAST.
THERE WERE SO MANY OF THEM WHO WERE MUCH HIGHER THAN A MERE SHOOTER WHO HAPPENED TO WIN AT THE MOMENT.
THOSE WHOSE ACHIEVEMENTS REALLY MEANT A THING FOR THE ORDINARY INDIAN.
THOSE TOP RATHNAS ARE OFTEN HIDDEN IN THE SAND OF CORRUPTION AND UNJUST APPROACH.

If Rajiv Gandhi could be conferred with Bharat ratna, then we can find at least a million people of that caliber in India for the award.

Having said that only Amitabh, Lata and Vajapayee deserve this award at the moment. After some time, Sachin and Manmohan Singh (more as FM in Narasimha Rao's cabinet rather than as PM) could be considered.

Dear Indians, Bharat Ratna should be given,in case they consider achievements in sports also, to Sri DHYANCHAND..The Legend Of Hockey. Even in Berlin Hitler thought it is his stick which is doing the magic,so made the stick breaking in two pices..but with the new stick, Sri Dhyanchand showed his magic again. First Sri Dhyanchand, then Mr.Tendulkar!

Yes..it is madness.I agree with Eric.I don't degrade Bindra, but Bharat Ratna should be given to those who sacrifice their whole life into particular field.Tendulkar has been playing for more than 2 decades ! Lata,Amitabh made Indian cinema/music Industy proud and they too worked in the field for more than 4 decades ! I don't agree with Bindra's recommendation. In that case I want Kabaddi Player Mamata from Mangalore district should be considered for Bharat Ratna..She brought Gold too and she is a Kabaddi captain.

This is absolutely madness. Bharat Ratna should be given to people like Lata Mangeshkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar or people in the field of Music. Even Sunil GAvaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar etc but not this sports person as he done nothing for sports.
