India protests detention of UP minister at Boston airport

Washington, Apr 26 (IANS): India has formally protested to the US over the brief detention of Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Mohammad Azam Khan at Boston airport as he arrived to take part in an event at Harvard University.

Khan, who is accompanying State Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for the presentation of a Harvard study on the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage, was detained for about 10 minutes for "further questioning" at Boston Logan International Airport Wednesday, according to Indian officials.

Once the visitors were cleared for entry by immigration, a woman officer of the US Customs and Border Protection wing of the Homeland Security took Khan to an adjacent room "for further questioning," sources said.

Incensed, Khan is reported to have kicked up a ruckus in the Imigration area saying he was detained because he was a Muslim and sought an apology from the officer who merely said she was doing her duty. As arguments became heated, officials from the Indian consulate in New York intervened and Khan was escorted out of the airport.

In Washington, Indian embassy spokesman M. Sridharan said the mission has "taken up the issue with the State Department officially and we have conveyed our serious concern."

"We have asked them to intervene and take appropriate measures to avoid recurrence in the future."

At the State Department, when asked to comment on the incident, spokesman Patrick Ventrell said he was "not aware of the specifics of this case" as the Department of Homeland Security has jurisdiction over airport movements inside the US.

But "I do want to underscore that we have a very important bilateral relationship with India and a very robust and thorough diplomatic exchange with our partners, he said. "We very much value our partnership with the Government of India."

The Azam Khan case is the latest instance of Indian VIPs being detained at US airports. Last year, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan was detained for over two hours by immigration officials at a New York airport.

Former President A P J Abdul Kalam was twice subjected to frisking at New York's JFK Airport by US security officials. India's then ambassador to the US Meera Shanker was patted down by a security agent in Mississippi in December 2010.

First of all, Azam Khan should have known that the more famous Khan was also subjected to similar checking. You may be a minister but who cares?
Secondly, is it possible that like a typical UP politician, Khan might be having several criminal cases against him and US may have that data! So a surname like Khan plus criminal case could be considered a potential threat. Even a surname like Tripathi also featured in the news recently right?
Finally to Shahnawaz Kukkikatte, please note that it is true that thousands are languishing in Indian jails due to rotten justice system, but seeing it from communal angle is not appropriate. For that matter, Hyderabad blast suspects (muslims) were aquitted but Pragya Thakur is not yet.

If you dont like to be searched in airports best way to avoid it is dont come here...peole here dont want one more 9/11/2001 incident here....

At times USA officials overdo it. However they may be justified by it. US authorities have subjected these to to even VIPs from India which is derogative Eg Klam, George Fernandes etc However let us reflect on our airports... the CISF personnel manning the airport entry are even worse ! They cant even communicate properly nor read the English printed tickets and ID documents like Passport ! There is no complaint procedure to highlight this to the higher authorities.

Even Mr.Hardeep Singh Puri - India's envoy to the UN was detained at an airport in Austin,Texas,USA and was told they had to check his turban sometime back in December 2010. I believe the US officials practice 'racial profiling' when it comes to security matters.

The US airport officials seem to be seriously deficiently educated because they seem to think that everyone with the name 'Khan' or 'Hassan' etc. is a suspect.
I suggest they should all be made to compulsorily watch Shahrukh Khan's movie 'My name is Khan'. Hope they will get some better sense then.

I cant agree with you more. each country has its own threat perceptions.America has every right to defend its country because it is susceptible religion based violence. It seems that the Boston Bombings by Chechen brothers might have prompted that. America will be more vigilant in the days to come. The next immigration bill will have lot of changes for sure.

We are the first to protest if Indian ministers are detained by foreign security personnel. Is it of any use I wonder? What happens later is anyone's guess. Ex president Kalam did not feel about it why should this minister? Better way would be to be calm in that situation. Anger made the minister famous. What a contradiction!!!!

It is common for people with a name 'Khan' in USA airports. Anyways it is their security matter. Our ministers have no respect in their own country, what kind of respect they expect from other countries.
