Former Maharashtra speaker's widow wins assembly by-poll


Mumbai, Mar 1 (IANS): Sandhya Desai-Kupekar, widow of former Maharashtra speaker Babasaheb Kupekar, has bagged the Chandgad assembly seat in Kolhapur district, an official here said.

The result of the by-poll, necessitated by the demise of Krishnrao R. Desai alias Babasaheb Kupekar in September 2012, was announced here late Thursday.

Desai-Kupekar, nominated by the Nationalist Congress Party, defeated her chief rivals, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana's Rajendra Gadynawar and Shiv Sena's Sunil Shintre in a triangular contest.

While Desai-Kupekar polled around 93,486 votes, Gadyanawar got around 68,639 votes and Shintre around 22,448 votes.

The polling was conducted Feb 24 to fill up the vacancy arising following Kupekar's death Sep 26 last year.
