Maharashtra celebrates Shivaji's birth anniversary

Mumbai, Feb 19 (IANS): The birth anniversary of Maratha warrior-king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was celebrated across Maharashtra Tuesday.

Governor K. Sankaranarayanan, Mumbai Mayor Sunil Prabhu, city civic chief Sitaram Kunte and other leaders attended a programme by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Commemoration Committee held to celebrate the occasion.

Sankaranarayanan and Prabhu paid floral tributes to the warrior king at his statue at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai.

In Pune, some roads were closed for traffic ahead of processions in the honour of Shivaji Maharaj.

The forex, stock market and other financial establishments also remained closed on the occasion.

Due to holiday Tuesday and a nationwide two-day shutdown call by central trade unions Wednesday and Thursday, many people left the city for an extended holiday.
