Post 'Sarabhai...', all comedies are child's play: Sumeet Raghavan

Mumbai, Feb 16 (IANS): Actor Sumeet Raghavan feels no sitcom on Hindi television has come close to being as good as "Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai". He even admits that post the show, the comedy genre has become a cakewalk for him.

"Unfortunately or fortunately, I have done a show called 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai' and after that, all comedies for me are child's play. I don't want to talk ill about anything, but the kind of benchmark that 'Sarabhai...' set, it is tough to even come close to that. I am glad I got to be a part of it," Sumeet told IANS.

The actor is currently seen in Colors' "Nautanki: The Comedy Theatre", which has brought Broadway style theatre to the Indian small screen.

It was the uniqueness of the show which attracted Sumeet to it.

"This is not a stand-up comedy show. It is called comedy theatre. I have been doing Marathi theatre since many years. This show is like Broadway. Here, it is not like contestants come and do their individual gags. It is like a full play," he said.

The actor has also been a part of shows like "Ghar Ki Baat Hai", "Mahabharat", "Hudd Kar Di". He said he likes variety in his work.

"I see to it that I do something which I have never touched before. I see to it that it may not be higher (better) than what I have done, but it should not be less. In comedy, it is difficult to come up with new concepts and make people laugh."

Talking about TV as a medium, Sumeet admits it is an extremely strong medium and the reach is wide.

"TV is one of the strongest media. Right from Amitabh Bachchan to Aamir Khan to Shah Rukh Khan - all have come here. So you can gauge the reach of the medium," he said.
