Madrid, Feb 7 (IANS/EFE): Spin Doctors, the creators of 1990s hits such as "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong", are in Spain for concerts featuring old favourites as well as cuts from their first new album in eight years.

The blues-based "If The River Was Whiskey" is due for release May 14.

"At the beginnings of the group, we tried to carve out a niche playing at blues clubs in New York, where they wanted us to do covers. One night we played original songs that sounded like those of Willie Dixon and Junior Walker and the owners didn't notice," lead singer Chris Barron told EFE during an interview in Madrid.

Two years after marking the 20th anniversary of their first album, "Pocket Full of Kryptonite", which sold more than 5 million copies, Spin Doctors wanted to try something new "without inventing anything, but rather drawing on our roots", Barron said in Spanish.

Following shows in the northern cities of Aviles and Pontevedra, the band will perform this week in Madrid and Barakaldo.

Spin Doctors plan to return to Spain in September to play at the second Festival of Light in A Coruna.

"Spain is very special for me because I have great friends here," said Barron.
