India, Pakistan spar - this time over Shah Rukh Khan

New Delhi/Islamabad, Jan 29 (IANS): Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was Tuesday at the centre of the latest round of sparring between two often uneasy neighbours with Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik's comment that India should provide the actor security prompting a sharp rebuke from New Delhi that Islamabad should mind its own minorities.

Malik said in Islamabad that the Indian government should provide security to Shah Rukh, in the thick of a controversy over his remarks on being a Muslim that led to Jamaat-ud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed saying the star could move to Pakistan.

Addressing reporters in Islamabad at a reception hosted by the Indian High Commissioner, Malik added that people of both Pakistan and India love Shah Rukh, reported Geo TV Tuesday.

"He (Shah Rukh) is born Indian and he would like to remain Indian, but I will request the Indian government (to) please provide him security," Malik said.

India was quick to react.

Soon after Malik's remarks were reported in the media, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari and Home Secretary R.K. Singh said Pakistan should worry about the state of affairs in its own country.

Both Tewari and R.K. Singh spoke in near identical terms to decry Malik's statement.

"Instead of introspection on how minorities in India are being treated, he (Malik) should contemplate how he can improve the condition of minorities in his country," Tewari told reporters.

He said it would be better for Pakistan if Malik paid attention to domestic matters of his own country rather than worrying about such things.

"The test of democracy is the way you treat your minorities rather than the majority. The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government has strived to see every citizen in the same light and given equal rights under the constitution," he said.

The home secretary spoke out too.

"We are quite capable of looking after security of our own citizens... let him (Malik) worry about security of his own," he said.

The Congress party slammed Malik's remarks.

Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said Malik should first take care of his own country's artistes and nationals.

"What to speak about security, they (Pakistan) even refused to allow ghazal singer Mehdi Hasan to come to India for treatment," Alvi told reporters.

He also said that Shah Rukh Khan does not need special security.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) too hit out, saying that they don't need Malik's advice.

"Indians in India are more safe and secure than the Pakistanis in Pakistan. We don't need Mr Malik's advice," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.

"If Indians feel insecure than it is from Mr Malik's ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) and Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed. Let him first take care of them first," he added.

Shah Rukh, one of Bollywood's more articulate personalities, had written in Outlook Turning Points magazine, published in association with The New York Times: "I sometimes become the inadvertent object of political leaders who choose to make me a symbol of all that they think is wrong and unpatriotic about Muslims in India."

"There have been occasions when I have been accused of bearing allegiance to our neighbouring nation rather than my own country - this even though I am an Indian, whose father fought for the freedom of India. Rallies have been held where leaders have exhorted me to leave and return to what they refer to my original homeland," added the 47-year-old star.

He went on say that he became so sick of being mistaken for some crazed terrorist, "who co-incidentally carries the same name as mine that I made a film subtly titled 'My Name Is Khan' (and I am not a terrorist) to prove a point".

"Ironically, I was interrogated at the airport for hours about my last name when I was going to promote the film in America for the first time," he said.

ShaRukh hasn't given any pro pakistani comment. It's all media and political conspiracy to malign his image and take ride on indian muslims. He is a high ranked celebrity and knows well to be remain sensible in real life.

For pakistan, it should mind it's own business rather snooping on indian muslims. First of all, it should better learn how to protect its own minorities and majorities there than giving silly advice to india.

I feel SRK is more privileged because he belongs to the minority community than an ordinary Indian of so called majority community. because an individual from majority community has to work doubly hard to get into a good educational institution. at times they come from poor families and no one to help them financially. This is the irony of vote bank politics which helps people based on caste and religion rather than based on economic status.

If Shahrukh Khan was not an actor, it wouldn't have made any difference to India or film industry. There are hundreds of actors better than him born, gone and will be emerging in future. Why such a hype on SRK? It is better not to give such people the undesired credit or respet. There are hundreds of thousands of others who serve the poor, the country, and are better achievers in various fields who truly deserve the country's highest honours and respect from people than these actors, cricket players.

Acting or playing cricket are their chosen fileds for survival and not for serving the country.

The only worst thing happened to you is, You were born in India. You cannot become famous here. People will drag you for one or the other issues.

Pakistan cannot protect its highest ranking politicians as well as bureaucrats notably Benazir Bhutto, Salman Tasseer and Bhatti

The establishing of Pakistan was based on an ideology that has failed. It began with the partition of the country that left more than 3.5 million dead or severely injured.

Besides, constant attacks in India there has been ongoing fighting in both East and West Pakistan that is looks like fighting has been going on as if in a league. Like a football league teams complete and over the years it has lead to the deaths of millions of people mainly Muslims, and even as we speak innocent blood is being spilled for nothing:

Here is the chronology of the fights:

    - The first Attacks were on the Ahmadia sect, and they were d non-Muslims and the attacks continue till today
    - Attacks on Hindus and Christians started and continue till today with less than 2% left and very soon they will be endangered species.
    - Then the big fight between East and West Pakistan and Bangladesh was born.
    - Next Bengali’s killed Bihari’s for supporting Pakistan.
    - Followed by Bengali’s killing Rohigya’s because they are not Bengali’s
-In Pakistan attacks began on the Muslim migrants from India called Mohajirs. Mohajirs formed MQM (Mujhe Qyun Mara) party and began attacking back.
-The next turn were Afghans refugees and Pathans in Karachi, who also fought back but were badly beaten.
-Then began the attacks in Baluchistan, and many of their senior leader were killed.
-Now we are seeing mass increased attacks on Sufi’s and Shia’s ... and the fighting continues.

So if Shah Rukh wants to stay it is great but if he makes that big move, then Hafiz Saeed would welcomed him, but I’m not quite sure if his wife Gauri and his children will be given the same welcome and protection that Hafiz and Malik talked about.

We have and had great and established celebrities and muslim film actors business personalities such as Aamir Khan, Salim Khan, Salman Khan and brothers, Irfan Khan, Shabana Ajmi, Javed Akthar, Dilip Kumar, Feroz Khan, Azim Premji, who never had problems in being Indian and did not face any such situation in India. If they wanted they could have easily migrated to developed countries given their wealth and capabilities. On the other hand they have stood with India thick and this at all timesHis popularity and career in the filmdom is dwindling day by day and these stunts played by him to get peoples attention to him. . He for the sake of cheap publicity has been doing all these dramas and gotten into these problem. Had he kept his mouth shut he would not have reached this situation. Grow up man. If he wants to live in any other country he is welcome to do so and nobody will stop him. One of his grouse has been the withdrawal of police security offered to him. Given the riches he have he should arrange for his own security rather than depending on the state. How many of us commoners have the privilege of having police security despite facing every day threates. No honest peace loving and patriotic Indian irresepective of Hindu, muslim Christian sikh is unsafe in India. These politicians also should work for the welfare of their country and people rather than focussing on these matters.
