Hungary to Appeal Against FIFA Sanction for Racial Slur

Budapest, Jan 9 (IANS): The Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) said that it will appeal against the sanction imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

Following a friendly match between Hungary and Israel, played Aug 15, 2012, in Budapest, FIFA was informed that a group of Hungarian supporters had chanted anti-Semitic slogans and displayed other offensive symbols, reports Xinhua.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee Tuesday notified the MLSZ of a sanction imposed at the meeting of the committee. The committee ordered Hungary to play a World Cup qualifier against Romania without spectators March 22. It also decided to impose a fine of CHF (Swiss francs) 40,000 on the MLSZ.

The MLSZ said in a statement on its website Tuesday that it will appeal for a fairer decision after receiving the official decision from FIFA. The sanction is excessive and unfair, the statement said.

Following an extensive investigation, the members of the Disciplinary Committee were unanimous in condemning an abhorrent episode of racism, anti-Semitism, and of political provocative and aggressive nature perpetrated by supporters of the Hungarian national team.
