Why Can't Sourav Ganguly Become National Coach, says Gundappa Viswanath

Kolkata, Jan 3 (PTI): Former captain Gundappa Viswanath feels that Sourav Ganguly is ideal candidate to replace Duncan Fletcher as the coach of the Indian cricket team.

"If Gary Kirsten can become India coach, why can't Ganguly? But it all depends on the BCCI and Ganguly to take a decision on this matter," said Viswanath, who has come to Kolkata as a part of the felicitation function organised by the Cricket Association of Bengal to celebrate the 25-years of Indo-Pak ODIs at the Eden Gardens.

The touch artist from yesteryears also backed Mahendra Singh Dhoni stating that "minus the last two (three Test series) series, his (Dhoni) record has been pretty good."

"Every team goes through a rough patch. We have seen that happened with the West Indies as well as Australia. Some take a bit of time to bounce back. It's part of a cycle and India are also going through a similar cycle," Viswanath said.

But he hoped that India would emerge with flying colours in the next two ODIs.

"You have to put in a little bit of extra effort. I am sure India will shine and come out with flying colours. India were 8 down against England on the final day of the 1977 Test yet it was a full-house Eden Gardens. Such is the support we get here. Undoubtedly, it's the best centre that I've played in," Viswanath said.

Earlier he inaugurated a bed at the Calcutta Medical Research Institute exclusively made for the benefit of first-class cricketers of Bengal.

How come a such a timely suggestion is cooked up in Kolkata batting for Ganguly after his visit there?. Is he returning the favour ?? Prior to that was Gundappa was in deep slumber ? That is how people call ‘it is the cricket’s tradition somewhere somewhat to fix the game’.

I fully agree with you Saleem Baji. All politicians Rajeev Shukla, Arun Jaitley, Sharad Pawar should stay away from this lucrative business of cricket. Then only any changes we can hope from the team

Well said. Vishy discovered and brought Ganguly into the national side and, we know, the rest is history. He was one of the best Chief ors of Indian Cricket - to his credit he has Dravid, Kumble etc. He knows what is best for Indian cricket & doesn't comment unnecessarily. Better someone in BCCI values his advise, which is just like his batting style.

If Ganguly made the National Coach, then how the BCCI and some of the ministers who run this cricket business will play their game? It is well known by now that whatever happenes to Indian Cricket we will have foreign coach (main coach, bowling coach, fielding coach etc.) who will blindly follow the instructions from the BCCI witht he best interset rests on BCCI agenda.
Friends, this is not Indian Cricket Team, but it is a business entity run by the BCCI and few ministers!
I think, Mohinder Amarnath should be made National or, Ganguly is best bet for the National Team Manager and we have so many good players who can be good coach for Indian Cricket Team. Trust me friends, if you remove gavaskar & Shastri from their involvement with BCCI, our team will be much much better for sure!

No boss, his attitude is not good. For India, foreign coach is always better. Indian coach will do politics again.
