Uruguay Striker Abreu Axed by Brazilian Club

Rio de Janeiro, Nov 26 (IANS): Brazilian club Figueirense has announced it has terminated the contract of veteran Uruguay international striker Sebastian "Loco" Abreu.

Abreu, who joined the club in July on an 18-month loan from Rio de Janeiro outfit Botafogo, managed just one goal in seven appearances as he struggled with injuries and poor form, reports Xinhua.

"The striker Loco Abreu had his contract rescinded on Saturday," Figueirense said on its official Twitter page.

The decision follows a disappointing year for Figueirense in which the Florianopolis-based side has already been relegated to Brazil's Serie B.

Abreu is expected to return to Botafogo but he is not guaranteed a first-team place under coach Oswaldo de Oliveira, who has shown an inclination for youth since going to the club in January.

Thirty-six-year-old Abreu has scored 26 goals in 70 appearances for Uruguay in an international career that began in 1996.
